Lumbar puncture

A procedure where a needle is placed in the lower part of the spine (the lumbar spine) to access cerebrospinal fluid. This procedure is both diagnostic as the fluid can be sent for analysis and therapeutic as it can relieve increased pressure in the brain. It is also known as a Spinal Tap.
